Eye Lift for Hooded Eyes: Options, Costs and Recovery
Every eye lift option for hooded eyes compared, from makeup tricks and non-surgical treatments to eyelid surgery, with NHS guidance on UK costs, recovery and risks.
By Magda Callery, interior designer

Hooded eyes are incredibly common. For some of us they're simply how our eyes have always looked; for others they appear gradually with age, as the skin above the eye loses elasticity and the brows begin to drop. Either way, if you've ever wondered about an eye lift for hooded eyes, there are more options than you might think, from a few clever makeup tricks to non-surgical treatments and eyelid surgery.
In this guide I'll explain what hooded eyes are and why they happen, compare every option side by side, and look in detail at eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), including UK costs, recovery, risks and when it's available on the NHS. You'll also find non-surgical options, a step-by-step makeup routine that instantly lifts hooded eyes, and how to choose a safe practitioner.
This article is for general information and isn't medical advice. Always speak to your GP, optician or a qualified medical professional about your own eyes.
What Are Hooded Eyes?
Hooded eyes have a fold of skin that sits over the crease of the upper eyelid, so that less of the lid is visible when your eyes are open. They can be:
- Natural. Many people are born with hooded eyes, and they're simply part of their eye shape.
- Age-related. Over time, skin loses collagen and elasticity, fat can shift, and the brows can drop, so more skin folds over the lid. The medical name for excess upper eyelid skin is dermatochalasis.
Hooded eyes or droopy eyelids?
Hooded eyes are different from ptosis, where the eyelid itself droops because of the muscle that lifts it. The two can look similar, and some people have both, which is why a proper assessment matters before any treatment. If one or both eyelids start drooping suddenly, or you also have symptoms such as double vision, a headache or weakness in your face, get urgent medical help.
Eye Lift for Hooded Eyes: Every Option Compared
| Option | How it works | Results | Lasts | Downtime | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Makeup techniques | Placing shadow and liner to create the look of a bigger lid | Instant, subtle to striking | Until you take it off | None | The cost of your makeup |
| Eyelid tapes or strips | Small adhesive strips fold the skin back into the crease | Instant, temporary | A day | None | Low |
| Brow shaping and lamination | Grooming the brows upwards and outwards to open the eye | Subtle | Weeks | None | Low |
| Anti-wrinkle injections ("Botox brow lift") | Relaxing muscles that pull the brow down, so it lifts slightly | Subtle | Temporary, usually a few months | Minimal | Moderate, repeated |
| Skin-tightening devices | Energy-based treatments to tighten skin | Subtle and gradual | Temporary | Minimal | Moderate to high |
| Upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) | Removing excess skin, and sometimes fat, from the eyelid | Significant | Long-lasting | About 2 weeks off work | About £2,000 to £6,000 in the UK |
| Brow lift surgery | Lifting the brows when they're the main cause of hooding | Significant | Long-lasting | Several weeks | High |
The NHS figure for blepharoplasty comes from the NHS guide to eyelid surgery, which notes that consultations, further surgery and follow-up care may cost extra.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) for Hooded Eyes
Blepharoplasty is the only option that physically removes the excess skin, so it gives the most noticeable result. Here's what the NHS says you can expect.
| What to expect | |
|---|---|
| What it is | Surgery to remove excess skin or fat from the eyelids |
| Anaesthetic | Local or general |
| How long it takes | About 45 minutes to 2.5 hours; most people go home the same day |
| Scars | Upper lid cuts follow the natural crease of the eyelid |
| Stitches | Usually removed up to a week later |
| Time off work | About 2 weeks, depending on your job |
| Driving | Not for several days |
| Bruising and redness | Can take several weeks to fade |
| Scarring | May be visible and feel tight for a few months |
| UK cost | About £2,000 to £6,000 |
Side effects and risks
According to the NHS, common side effects include puffy, numb eyelids that can be difficult to close, irritated or watery eyes for a few weeks, bruising and scars that should eventually fade. Occasional risks include blurred or double vision, eyes that look uneven, noticeable scarring and changes in eyelid sensation. Rarer risks include injury to the eye muscles, the lower lid turning outwards and bleeding into the eye socket, alongside the general risks of any surgery, such as bleeding, infection and blood clots. As with any cosmetic procedure, the result can't be guaranteed.
Can you get an eye lift on the NHS?
Cosmetic eyelid surgery isn't usually available on the NHS. However, local NHS funding policies may cover upper eyelid surgery when excess skin significantly affects your vision. For example, the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire ICB policy requires evidence that loose skin is blocking the upper field of vision, confirmed by a visual field test. If you think your eyelids affect your sight, speak to your GP or optician.
Non-Surgical Eye Lift Options
If you'd rather avoid surgery, these options can make a subtle difference.
- Anti-wrinkle injections. Sometimes called a "Botox brow lift", small injections relax the muscles that pull the outer brow down, so it lifts a little and opens up the eye. The effect is subtle and temporary, so treatment needs repeating. Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, and in England it's illegal to give it to under 18s for cosmetic reasons. Only have it from a qualified medical professional after a face-to-face consultation.
- Skin-tightening treatments. Energy-based devices such as radiofrequency and ultrasound aim to tighten skin gradually. Results are usually modest and vary from person to person.
- Eyelid tapes and strips. Thin adhesive strips placed in the crease fold the skin back for the day. They're a popular quick fix for special occasions; patch test first and stop if your skin becomes irritated.
- Brow grooming. Shaping, tinting or laminating the brows so they sit higher at the tail can make the eyes look more open.
What about eye creams and eye exercises? A good eye cream can hydrate and smooth the skin, but no cream or exercise can remove excess eyelid skin. Daily sun protection is one of the best ways to protect the delicate skin around your eyes as you age. My guide to DIY natural beauty has gentle skincare ideas.
How to Lift Hooded Eyes With Makeup
This is where you can make the biggest difference, instantly and for free. The key is to work with your eyes open, so you can see what others will see.
- Prime the lids. Hooded eyes often transfer eyeshadow and liner onto the fold above. A thin layer of eyelid primer keeps everything in place all day.
- Find your "new crease". Look straight ahead in the mirror with your eyes open. Place a matte mid-tone shadow just above your natural crease, on the part of the hood you can still see, so it creates the illusion of a deeper crease and a bigger lid.
- Use the windscreen wiper motion. Blend the shadow back and forth with a fluffy brush, keeping it soft.
- Lift the outer corner. Angle the shadow up towards the tail of your brow rather than dragging it down. This gives an instant lifted look.
- Choose matte over shimmer on the hood. Matte shades make the hood recede. Save shimmer for the centre of the lid and the inner corner, where it catches the light.
- Tightline the upper lash line. Pencil liner pressed into the roots of the upper lashes defines the eye without taking up lid space.
- Try a "bat wing" liner. If you love a flick, draw it with your eyes open, following the shape of the hood, so the wing doesn't fold or disappear when you look ahead.
- Curl your lashes. Curled lashes open the eye and lift the lid visually. Finish with a waterproof or tubing mascara so it doesn't smudge onto the hood.
- Lift your brows. Fill in and brush your brows up, keeping the tail slightly higher. A little concealer just under the brow bone sharpens the lift.

Makeup dos and don'ts for hooded eyes
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Use a primer | Skip primer if your shadow creases or transfers |
| Apply shadow with your eyes open | Rely on your natural crease, which is hidden |
| Use matte shades on the hood | Put dark or shimmery shades only on the moving lid |
| Lift the outer corner upwards | Drag shadow or liner downwards |
| Tightline the lash line | Draw a thick line that covers the lid |
| Curl your lashes | Forget your brows, which frame the whole eye |

How to Choose a Safe Practitioner
The NHS advises checking the following before any cosmetic surgery:
- Is the surgeon registered with the General Medical Council? Check the GMC register, including their fitness-to-practise history.
- Is the clinic registered with the Care Quality Commission? In England, independent clinics and hospitals that provide cosmetic surgery must be CQC registered, and you can read their inspection reports.
- How experienced are they? Ask how many eyelid operations they've performed, their complication rates and what follow-up care you'll get.
- Take time to decide. Be sure of your reasons, weigh up the cost and risks, and don't feel pressured by special offers.
For any procedure abroad, think carefully about follow-up care and what happens if something goes wrong once you're home.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best eye lift for hooded eyes?
For a significant, long-lasting result, upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is the only option that removes excess skin. For a subtle, temporary lift, anti-wrinkle injections, brow grooming and eyelid tapes can help, and makeup techniques give an instant result.
How much does an eye lift for hooded eyes cost in the UK?
According to the NHS, eyelid surgery costs about £2,000 to £6,000 in the UK, plus any consultation, further surgery or follow-up costs.
Can you get an eye lift on the NHS?
Not usually for cosmetic reasons. Some local NHS policies fund upper eyelid surgery when excess skin significantly blocks your vision, confirmed by a visual field test. Speak to your GP or optician if you think your eyelids affect your sight.
How long is recovery from eyelid surgery?
Most people take about two weeks off work. Bruising and redness can take several weeks to fade, and scars may feel tight for a few months.
Can you lift hooded eyes without surgery?
Yes, but the results are subtle and temporary. Anti-wrinkle injections can lift the brow slightly, eyelid tapes fold the skin back for the day, and makeup techniques can make hooded eyes look noticeably more open.
What makeup is best for hooded eyes?
An eyelid primer, matte eyeshadows placed just above the crease with your eyes open, tightlined upper lashes, curled lashes with waterproof mascara and lifted, well-groomed brows.
Are hooded eyes the same as droopy eyelids?
Not quite. Hooded eyes have a fold of skin over the crease, while droopy eyelids (ptosis) happen when the lid itself droops. If your eyelid starts drooping suddenly, seek urgent medical advice.
Open, Bright and Confident
An eye lift for hooded eyes doesn't have to mean surgery. Start with the makeup techniques above, which can make a real difference in minutes. If you're considering a treatment or surgery, speak to your GP, do your research and choose a qualified, registered professional.
